Trafigura Agrees to Pay $76 Million in Brazil Bribery Cases

Summary: In April 2025, Trafigura agreed to a $75.8 million settlement with Brazilian authorities, resolving civil cases stemming from its decade-long bribery practices aimed at securing oil deals. This follows a prior guilty plea in a U.S. federal court, where the company admitted to paying bribes from 2003 to 2014 and accepted a $127 million penalty. Of that amount, only $10 million was paid initially, with the rest contingent on reaching a settlement in Brazil — now fulfilled. The bribery was linked to the notorious "Car Wash" scandal involving Petrobras. As part of the agreement, Trafigura will also improve its compliance and governance systems in Brazil. The case underscores broader scrutiny of global commodity traders, as Trafigura simultaneously faces corruption probes in Switzerland and suffered a $1.1 billion loss in a Mongolian fraud case.
