In a revelation, a consultant, referred to as "Mr. Non-Compliant" due to his alleged role in managing bribes, believed he was an integral part of Trafigura's inner circle. He disclosed in a memo that Trafigura founder Claude Dauphin convinced him to take on a controversial role, promising it was a significant service to the company and offering a future return as an employee.

Key highlights from the trial:
The consultant managed operations that "could not be done internally," shedding light on Trafigura's use of intermediary companies, often set up by former employees, to execute dubious transactions.
This included alleged bribes to an Angolan official between 2009 and 2011, a practice Trafigura vowed to abandon in 2019.
This week marks a critical juncture as senior leadership of a major commodity trading house stands trial for bribery and corruption for the first time.
Former COO Mike Wainwright, who is among the defendants, has testified, defending both his actions and the legacy of Trafigura's late founder. Despite denying any memory of authorizing substantial payments linked to the bribes, Wainwright's statements reveal internal tensions and operational practices within Trafigura.
